Faculty of Education Public Lecture - ClaytonPublished: 10 December 2008 Title: Desert and ice: Learning without boundaries Presented by: Eva Alerby, Krister Hertting and Karolina Parding, Lulea University of Technology, Sweden. The Sami people of Northern Sweden and the Indigenous people of Central Australia live in contrasting environments in many ways than just the physical. There are differences in their cultural and economic environments and also in their historical and contemporary relationships with the dominant culture. Both cultures however have similarities in terms of some of the problems they face and the possible solutions to these problems, in particular those with respect to education of young people. This project explores how formal and informal learning takes place among people in the two cultures at the local community level and what aspect of learning, as well as knowledge, is valued. It will do this by exploring and contrasting children's experiences of learning and educational outcomes in the two cultures. Teachers' roles and experiences will also be examined. The seminar will discuss the foundation of the project and some preliminary outcomes. All welcome. Time: 12 pm - 1 pm For further information please visit the Faculty of Education seminars webpage.
