Faculty of Education Public Lecture - Clayton

Published: 10 December 2008

Title: 'Changes in working conditions of teachers under education reforms in Sweden '

Presented by: Karolina Parding, Lulea University of Technology, Sweden.

Swedish upper secondary school education has undergone significant reforms since the 1990s. The reforms include changes in governance, organisation and management, and have their origin in the new public management discourse where effectiveness, efficiency and economy are key words.

The reforms have impacted on working conditions of teachers and have resulted in changes in the organisation of teachers' work. This seminar will present a case study to illustrate the tensions between the profession and the organisation and also between policy and practice from the school education reforms of the last two decades in Sweden. It will examine the ongoing negotiation process of shaping, and re-shaping professional work.

All welcome.
