Out-of-classroom online second language learning and use by Sarah Pasfield-Neofitou.

The spread of the Internet and remarkable growth in its use has resulted in increased intercultural communication. This seminar examines the use of Internet communication tools by Australian university students for authentic social interaction with their Japanese peers, in both Japanese and English. Data for the study were collected in the form of emails, chat logs, social network blogs, and other recorded Internet communication over a period of time. These data were augmented with students’ background characteristics and personal interviews, investigating students’ language and in-country experiences. Follow-up interviews with a stimulated recall component were also conducted. The seminar will discuss implications, from the study, for more effective online communication for learners and teachers, as well as directions for future theoretical research.
