This intensive course is designed to assist researchers, ethics committee members and others involved in the conduct and assessment of research to understand and clarify the issues arising in relation to research of all kinds involving human participants. It will provide an opportunity for members of the research and research ethics communities to come together to discuss the issues they face and share their experiences.

The course aims to give registrants an appreciation of the philosophical and ethical issues underlying research involving human participants, an understanding of the issues relating to different research methodologies and research involving special populations and an ability to appreciate trials.

The Program

The program is interactive and will include small group discussions and workshops. There will be ample provision for free time to encourage further discussion and debate among participants.

Topics to be covered:

  • philosophical models of research ethics
  • problems of HIV research in Australia and abroad
  • research involving particular cultural groups
  • qualitative research
  • research involving unconscious, critically ill and incompetent patients
  • privacy
  • ethics committee processes and problems.

Sessions will commence at 4 pm on Sunday 30th November.

Bus transit departs from Melbourne Airport at 2 pm Eastern Summer Time.

Speakers

Sessions will be led by many of the leaders in the field of research ethics nationally.

The Location

The Bellinzona Grange Country Retreat is 90 minutes drive from Melbourne and 75 minutes from Melbourne Airport. Within walking distance of the famous Hepburn Spas, Bellinzona is nestled between Ballarat and Macedon, offering modern and historic interest for those who might like to extend their stay in the area. The region offers a range of activities such as horse riding, walking, golf, swimming, baths, massage and visits to vineyards.
