European Union and Economic Growth -- CaulfieldPublished: 27 August2008 In September 1989 Leszek Balcerowicz became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the first non-communist government in Poland after World War II. He was also President of the Economic Committee of the Council of Ministers. In this vital period in Poland's transition he designed and executed the radical stabilisation and transformation of the Polish economy for which he received Poland's highest decoration, the Order of the White Eagle. His distinguished career has seen him President of the Freedom Union; President of the National Bank of Poland, Distinguished Associate of the International Atlantic Economic Society (IAES) and a member of Group of Trustees, Institute of International Finance. Leszek Balcerowicz is the recipient of numerous honours and awards worldwide and the author of more than a 100 publications on economic issues in Poland and abroad.
