Workshop P: Teaching Linguistically Diverse Groups -- Clayton

The Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education (CMHSE) is now offering a range of staff development workshops for clinical teachers from all areas of health professional education.

This workshop outlines some of the language and cultural factors affecting clinical teaching and learning in multicultural groups, and introduces practical strategies for teaching students from non-English speaking language backgrounds. Principles and approaches learned in this workshop can be applied more widely to a range of teaching contexts. The workshop focuses on:

• the relationship between communication style, culture and language;
• the ways in which discourse rules, based in culture, impact on communication;
• cultural, language and teaching methodology factors that may inhibit international students and influence clinical learning and performance;
• principles and methodology for a safe and effective learning environment;
• instructional strategies and teacher language to facilitate increased student participation; and
• the integration of communication skills teaching into clinical content.
