Monash University - A plastic bag-free zone

14 December 2005

From 2006, all six Victorian Monash campuses will officially be plastic bag-free zones as the university once again takes the lead on environmental issues. By reducing our plastic bag use we will be helping to decrease the negative impacts that plastic bags have on waterways and wildlife. The process will take time to implement, although support from Monash Environment Institute and Occupational Health Safety and Environment (OHSE) will ensure the transition is as simple and convenient as possible for students, staff and vendors.

Next year at enrolment and open days some campuses will issue enviro (reusable)bags whilst other campuses will ask students to please support the program by brining their own bags.

All departments and Monash affiliated groups will be expected to encourage people to bring their own bags onto the campus; deplete their current stock of plastic bags; discourage the provision of plastic bags to customers, staff and guests through education, signage and service initiatives; and use renewable or biodegradable bags where the use of bags is unavoidable.
