Monash Asia Institute seminar

30 November 2005

When: Friday 2 December, 10 am
Where: Room S822, level 8 South, Menzies Building, Clayton campus

'The permanent residency industry: Indian overseas students in Australia'

Speaker: Mr Michiel Baas, PhD Candidate, University of Amsterdam and Honorary Research Fellow, Monash Asia Institute

India is currently one of the largest providers of international students to Australia, with more than 20,000 Indians currently studying 'Down Under'. Indian students don't just seem to be here for education though: they are also known to apply for permanent residency (PR) afterwards.

Mr Baas's doctorate is about Indian overseas students in Melbourne and deals with three questions: why are they here, what do their lives look like when they are here, and what plans do they have for the future? In this seminar he will mainly address the issue of PR and what sort of practical consequences this has for the way Indian students live their lives Down Under.
