Victorian Partnership of Advanced Computing seminar30 November 2005 As a member of the Victorian Partnership of Advanced Computing, Monash University staff are invited to attend a Victorian Partnership of Advanced Computing seminar. 'Multi-scale models and emergence of function in the kidney medulla: Difficulties technical and conceptual', presented by Dr S. Randall Thomas, Director of Research, National Center for Scientific Research. Dr Thomas regularly teaches thermodynamics of membrane transport, metabolic contral analysis, and initiation to compartmental modeling and simulation in France, Ireland, and Austria. How does the kidney concentrate urine? There is currently no satisfactory biophysical explanation. Since 1951, several ideas have been shown, by mathematical modelling, to be theoretically consistent with available data 'under certain assumptions about unmeasured parameters'. This seminar will provide an explanation of several of these studies, including models to explore hypotheses currently under consideration, focusing on the mathematical methods and numerical problems, but also on the difficulty of adopting a "naive" point of view that allows new insights. When: Friday 9 December, 9.30 - 10.30 am, refreshments provided RSVP by Tuesday 6 December by emailing natalie@vpac.org or contact + 61 3 9925 4645 Further information is available at www.vpac.org/vaca/events.php. |
