'The representation of Islam and Muslims in the media' public forum

23 November 2005

When: 6 December 2005, 6 - 7.30 pm
Where: Monash University, Level 7, 30 Collins Street, Melbourne

This timely forum will explore the representation of Muslims in the Australian media. As the political and social ramifications of the recent security-related arrests demonstrate, public interest in the Australian Muslim community is at record levels. Such developments underscore the need for balanced and objective coverage by the media, a vital tool in formulating societal responses and perceptions.

Drawing together academic experts and community leaders, this session will facilitate a full and frank exchange of views and provide a forum for discussion on how the Australian Muslim community is presented to the wider community and how current media coverage is perceived by the community itself.

Panel:

  • Dr Shahram Akbarzadeh, Senior Lecturer, School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University
  • Dr Bianca Smith, Researcher, School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University
  • Mr Yasser Soliman, former president of the Islamic Council of Victoria
  • Mr Waleed Aly, member of the executive committee of the Islamic Council of Victoria

  • Mr George Lekakis, Chairperson, Victorian Multicultural Commission
