The process of recruitment and selection into the principal class in schools can provide information on the motivation and characteristics of teachers who aspire to become leaders.

This paper reports analyses of data from two projects concerned with aspirant principals' perspectives about principal recruitment in three Australian states. In particular, two aspects of principal recruitment are investigated.

First, the resilience of aspirants in the face of failure experienced during the selection process; and second, the ways in which principal class selection and appointment processes inhibit the realisation of teachers' aspirations to become principals.

Finally, the paper explores some possible explanations for this practice and reviews its wider significance in respect of the themes of risk, risk-taking and risk aversion in employment recruitment.
