Faculty of Medicine seminar

2 November 2005

'Chromosome Ends, Life, Death and Cancer', by Dr Elizabeth Blackburn, School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

When: Tuesday 8 November, 6.30pm
Where: Cinema 2, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Federation Square .

World-renowned scientist Dr Elizabeth Blackburn will explore the role of telomerase (which protects chromosomes from damage) and its ability to preserve cells. New research shows a link between telomerase and diseases of ageing, such as heart disease. On the flip-side, telomerase is also over-active in human cancers.

This talk will explore potential therapeutic applications of this research and look at how this property of cancer cells can be exploited. Dr Blackburn is the Louis Matheson Distinguished Visiting Professor at Monash University. An expatriate, she has become one of the world's leading cancer biologists.
