Faculty of Education seminars

26 October 2005

a) 'Establishing common ground: using English as a lingua franca', Mrs Anna Podorova

When: Wednesday 26 October, 1 -- 2 pm
Where: Room G25, building 6, Clayton campus

This seminar reports on the findings of a study focusing on the use of English as an international language. It draws on data from a number of English language users (both native and non-native) and identifies several characteristics of the international use of English, such as flexibility, diversity, meaning negotiation and word invention.

The seminar also explores the notion of 'common ground' and strategies, which are necessary for successful use of English in situations of cross-cultural communication. The results of this study have potential significance for all involved in using, learning and teaching English.

b) 'School and community based practicum projects' by Dr Janette Ryan, Faculty of Education

When: Wednesday 2 November, 1--2 pm
Where: Room G25, building 6, Clayton campus

This seminar reports on an initiative in the second year of a pre-service teacher (PST) Bachelor of Education program at a small regional university that used community and school-based authentic learning and assessment tasks to shift some of these perceptions.

The findings showed that as a result of PSTs' participation in the program, their views of teaching and learning shifted from concerns about technical aspects of their practice towards concerns about students' learning and engagement.

The program also involved a shift from the classroom teacher taking on a supervisory role to a more mentoring role and weekly engagement in the school by PSTs across the whole year, resulting in the development of more collaborative relationships between the university and schools.

c) Researching Work Learning and Leadership Seminar Series

'Changes in work-changes in learning: Explaining the changing relationship of work and learning', by Dr Richard Cooney, Faculty of Business and Economics; Mr Damon Anderson, Faculty of Education and Ms Robin Hill; Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

When: Tuesday 8 November, 4--6 pm
Where: Room G25, building 6, Clayton campus

The three panellists in this seminar will consider the learning consequences of particular aspects of work changes and how they might be theorised. The presenters will identify an instance of change at work, and use this to explore the following questions: How does the change effect learning at work? What is the impact of the change in terms of work and learning? What does this example tell us about the relationship between work and learning?
