Faculty of Education seminar

19 October 2005

'Establishing common ground: using English as a lingua franca'.

When: Wednesday 26 October, 1 -- 2 pm
Where: Room G25, building 6, Clayton campus

This seminar reports on the findings of a study focusing on the use of English as an international language. It draws on data from a number of English language users (both native and non-native) and identifies several characteristics of the international use of English, such as flexibility, diversity, meaning negotiation and word invention.

The seminar also explores the notion of 'common ground' and strategies, which are necessary for successful use of English in situations of cross-cultural communication. The results of this study have potential significance for all involved in using, learning and teaching English.
