Family and Small Business Research Unit Seminar

14 September 2005

When: Thursday 22 September, 10.30 am to 1 pm (followed by light lunch)
Where: Room 5N 158, Business and Economics conference room, Gippsland campus

Small firm employment practices are under scrutiny in this industrial relations policy reform period. New workplace relations legislation is likely to put pressure on small firms to take control of managing their workforce effectively using appropriate practices and policies.

The keynote speaker will be Professor Monder Ram OBE, director of the Small Business and Enterprise Research Group, De Montfort University, UK and director of the Centre for Research on Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship, who will talk about the work of the British government's Small Business Council and what it is doing to support and grow small businesses.

Associate Professor Rowena Barrett, Department of Management, Monash, will report on her survey of employment relations in Latrobe Valley small businesses and talk about what research says more generally about managing people in small business.

Three Latrobe Valley small business employers - Marg Norder, Nordical Diving and All Fresh to Go; Mario Monacella, Monacellars and Gareth Lancaster, FabCad - will talk about their business and what they do to get the best from staff.
