Ms Ng Shing Wei is set to carve out her own career path in order to fulfil her dreams of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease.

The 25-year old Masters degree graduate from Monash University Sunway campus has secured a place at Cambridge University, UK to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology with a research focus on Alzheimer's disease.

"It is a personal ambition of mine to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease," Ms Ng said.

Her successful application came as no surprise to her supervisors, as they had high hopes for Ms Ng, who is also the recipient of the Yousef Jameel Scholarships under the Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme.

Ms Ng completed her undergraduate degree and Honours year at the Sunway campus.

"Monash is really like a home to me, having studied here for the past six years and in such a short amount of time, I have seen the Sunway campus grow academically in leaps and bounds," Ms Ng said.

"We have spacious laboratories that are well-equipped with the latest scientific instruments," she said.

"I would like to thank our dedicated and hardworking lecturers and staff who have sharpened our theoretical and practical skills that are fundamental in research,"

Ms Ng said teaching staff at the School of Science taught her to work harder and smarter as scientific research fields become increasingly fast-paced and competitive.

Speaking from her experience, Ms Ng said current students who have the passion and drive to undertake research could pursue an Honours degree.

"You really learn more about research once you take up Honours. It was a fun and eye-opening journey for me, but you must be prepared to put in the work," she said.

Upon completion of her PhD in three years time, Ms Ng plans to return to Malaysia to continue to find treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
