Monash was well-represented at this year's Victorian Rhodes Scholarship Prize with students Fiona Lander and Merav Bloch both shortlisted - two of only four students selected in Victoria.
The Rhodes Scholarship, in its 107th year, provides successful recipients with a full-time postgraduate course position of their choice at the University of Oxford with all university and residential college fees paid by the Rhodes Trust.
Typical Rhodes Scholars are considered to have outstanding academic achievements, a background in community work, be active participants in sport and display strong leadership skills.
Fiona Lander, 24, a Monash MBBS/Bachelor of Law student, applied for the Rhodes scholarship in the hope she could pursue her dream of completing study in the area of civil law' at Oxford with the aim of practicing in the field of human rights and medicine.
"I am still very keen to obtain a masters degree to further my studies but the next 12 months will be very much a practical experience working with the UN in Mumbai," Ms Lander said.
"The application process for the Rhodes scholarship has been a fantastic experience.
"It helps you to clearly define your career path and makes you determined to follow it. I would encourage any student wanting to succeed at Oxford to consider it - it's tough, but well worth the effort."
Merav Bloch, also a law student, can add the finals experience to her growing list of achievements. In 2006, she won the Lexis Nexis Prize for Constitutional Law and the Monash Law School Prizes for Evidence in 2007 and Conflict of Laws in 2008.
At the end of judging last week, University of Melbourne student Jack Fuller was announced as this year's scholarship recipient; however, Merav will head to Canberra before the end of the year to compete for one of three national Australia-at-large Rhodes scholarships. Merav is hoping to expand her law skills through studies in Regulatory Law focusing on Competition Law.
Monash has many Rhodes Scholarship recipients including Anthea Lindquist (2008), Farnaz Sabet (2005), Lucas Bluff (2004), Geraldine Buckingham (2003) and Nathan Grills (2002).
Anthea is preparing to study for a Master in Global Health Science at Oxford University, a degree that promotes advanced skills in epidemiology, public health policy, project development and economics.
