Monash is collaborating with the University of Melbourne, RMIT University and Fujitsu Australia to develop a shared IT data centre that will make a significant contribution to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The data centre, to be built in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, will cut energy use through improved data centre design and the shared use of the latest energy efficient technology.
Data centres are the central hubs that house servers and storage infrastructure.
The Green IT program has estimated that information technologies account for around 13 per cent of Monash's electricity usage, and the University's two data centres are responsible for 50 per cent of that consumption.
Monash Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Edwina Cornish said the project was a great opportunity for collaboration between three universities.
"The joint project will bring considerable savings, an opportunity to increase data centre capacity in a more flexible and rapid way as demand increases, as well as substantial energy efficiency and sustainability for our staff and students," she said.
Monash, Melbourne and RMIT will start moving into the data centre in January 2010.
Expansion of the facility will be commissioned in 2011. Expected rising demand will be met by an increase of 100 square metres of space per year.
