The grassed area between the Campus Centre and the Menzies Building at Clayton campus used to be known as The Forum.
In the late 60s and early 70s, student activism grew at Monash as students banded together to vocally oppose the Vietnam War.
The Forum lawns became the venue for large outdoor meetings, where students could gather to have their say, with the idea that a 'town meeting' format could help decide issues rather than a Student Representative Council model.
The area was later landscaped to address problems with high winds, which were dragged to ground level by the façade of the Menzies.
