Name: Frada Burstein
Org. Unit: Faculty of Information Technology
Title: Associate Dean Research Training, Associate Professor
How long have you been with Monash University?
Since 1992.
Prior to working at Monash, where were you located and what was your role?
I was a senior research fellow at the Georgian Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications, Tbilisi, in Georgia, USSR.
What challenges are ahead in your current role?
Making sure I can complete as much of my exciting plan for research training and research students for the faculty in the remaining two months of my being in the role of Associate Dean.
What is it about your job that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?
It was the most satisfying experience to play a strategic role at the faculty level and be in a position to participate in the continuous improvement of research training at Monash. I am still committed to devoting my time to training new researchers, but in a more 'hands on' role. Getting the 2009 Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award in supervision meant a lot to me. It's an honour, but also a responsibility to keep up the standards my students expect from me.
What is your favourite place in the world and why?
At the moment, it's Skype. It is the place where I can meet most of my family and friends.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
"In order to play cricket you don't need to know the rules, you need to be a gentleman". The person who gave me this advice has taught me a lot about the Australian character.
What is something about yourself that most of your colleagues wouldn't know?
I've wanted to be a fashion designer since I was five. My parents suggested I do computer science instead. More than 30 years on in my career has proven that developing computer systems requires as much creativity and devotion to fashion and style.
