Peter Wade room opened at Clayton

It has taken almost 10 years, but a plan to refurbish Peter Wade's former office as a fully-equipped meeting room has finally come to fruition.

Mr Wade served Monash for 14 years from 1985. As its most senior non-academic administrator at a time of rapid expansion, he has been given credit for re-shaping the University's finances and budgeting structures, and placing them on a very sound footing.

The room, in Building 3B at the Clayton campus, includes videoconferencing facilities to help meet rapidly expanding demand across the University.

At the launch of the facility, Mr Wade spoke warmly of his time at Monash.

Faces kick goals

A new exhibition of work by final-year Master of Visual Arts student Neale Stratford has opened at the Switchback Gallery at the Gippsland campus.

The exhibition explores the artist's experience of Asperger's syndrome through photographs of the faces of 200 action figures.

Made redundant during the dismantling of the State Electricity Commission, Neale retrained as an artist and gained employment as a photography/digital media technician.

Face Value will be open until Thursday 22 October at Switchback Gallery, Building 6S, Gippsland campus.

Double celebration for Monash researcher

Dr Tu'uhevaha Kaitu'u-Lino from the Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) has received two awards at the Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Female awards.

She was announced the winner of the Inspirational Role Model category and the overall 2009 Fun, Fearless Female: Woman of the Year.

At only 28, Tu'uhevaha is a young scientist who has dedicated her research career to discovering why some women suffer from heavy, painful and prolonged menstruation.

Her research will increase understanding of how adult stem-cells function in regenerating the endometrium (lining of the uterus) and provide vital insights into inadequate endometrial repair in abnormal uterine bleeding.

Student thinks global

Fourth-year Bachelor of Pharmacy student Zhen Peng Gu (Galahad) has presented on the study experiences of international students at the recent launch of Thinking Global: Victoria's Action Plan for International Education.

His presentation focused on the many co-curricular activities he has been involved in and highlighted the many opportunities he has had for professional experience.

"I consider myself extremely lucky to have the opportunity to study in Australia because I know if I had stayed back in China I would not have had the opportunity to try the many things I have already achieved. I have experienced superior facilities, teaching staff, and curriculum," Galahad said.

The State Government action plan aims to develop long-term growth in international education, enhance international students' connections, and maintain quality in international education.

Law students win awards

Undergraduate law students Humaira (Mira) Lufti and Andrew Vincent were awarded second and third prize respectively at the recent 2009 Constitution Education Fund Australia (CEFA) national awards ceremony.

The awards, which were held at the National Gallery of Victoria, were presented by Australia's Governor-General Quentin Bryce AC.

Acting Dean of Law Professor H P Lee and lecturer Dr Colin Campbell witnessed the awarding of the prizes.
