The diverse higher education classroom can present a challenge to university academics, with students operating at different levels of language proficiency, cultural competency and abilities. Within this context it can be challenging to create teaching environments and learning experiences that are conducive to effective student learning. This workshop will focus on suggested strategies to facilitate effective teaching and learning practices with culturally and linguistically diverse student cohorts and diverse learners including students with a disability.

Topics covered will include

  • Lecture accessibility
  • Managing assessment expectations
  • Giving feedback

Facilitators
Ms Catherine Barratt, Lecturer Department of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of Business and Economics, Monash University. Catherine works in an education quality role for the Department of Accounting and Finance and also teaches three modules in the Graduate Certificate of Academic Practice (OPVCLT). Catherine has an extensive background in curriculum and assessment design having designed courses across all education sectors and also for government clients such as DIAC. Her research interests are: curriculum mapping, cross-cultural communication, internationalisation of the curriculum and transnational education.

Mr Thomas Perry, Coordinator, Disability Liaison Unit, Equity and Diversity Centre, Monash University. Tom has over 20 years experience working in the disability, adult education and higher education fields. He has experience and qualifications in secondary and adult education, disability studies and community services (management), and currently works as Coordinator of the Disability Liaison Unit at Monash University.
