Description:
Two public seminars at the Monash European and EU Centre
EU as Climate Change Policy Leader in the World
Alfonso Martínez Arranz will introduce the political issues associated with climate change and present the EU as “front runner” in the development of climate policy. This is in contrast to the notion that the EU is a “leader” in the field because that presupposes “followers”, which have been conspicuous by their absence. The lecture includes a detailed discussion of the much debated Emissions Trading Scheme and of the raft of legislation known as the Climate and Energy Package.
Alfonso is a PhD candidate, editor and researcher at the Monash European and EU Centre. He holds a BA Hons. and has obtained competitive scholarships in Spain, China and Australia. He has published on the EU and its environmental and energy policy.

The Euro and the World
Peter O’Shea will overview the nature of the economic problems facing the EU at present, the major policy response to the problems and how the crisis has affected the evolution of the European integration project.
Peter’s research focuses on the drivers of ongoing European integration in the area of economic governance in the EU. Specifically it looks at actors and forces involved in integration in this area since the advent of the global financial crisis in late 2008 and the forces shaping policy-making in this area. Peter received an Australian Postgraduate Award in the mid-year 2011 scholarship round.
