Description:

Professor LAROCHE, Université de Lorraine, France

Abstract: Using nationally representative workplace surveys we examine the relationship between unionization and workplace financial performance in Britain and France. We find that union bargaining is detrimental to workplace performance in both countries.  However, in Britain the effect is confined to unionized workplaces where there is active collective bargaining.  In the French case, the effect is confined to the minority of cases where unions have high density and where unions have a reputation for militancy. This research was conducted jointly with Alex Bryson and John Forth, National Institute of Economic and Social Research, UK.

About the speaker:  He is a Professor of Human Resource Studies and Labor Relations at the Université de Lorraine (France). He is also the Director of the CEREFIGE (Centre Européen de Recherche en Economie Financière et Gestion des Entreprises). He has been a Visiting Professor at Cornell University, ILR School (2011, 2012) and UC Berkeley (2010, 2012). His research activity is mainly devoted to the study of industrial and labour relations with particular emphasis on the analysis of the impact of unions on firm performance. He is particularly interested in understanding how a number of factors such as the nature of the union, the industrial relations climate, the level and intensity of the union involvement, the type of organization and other managerial activities influence the relationship between unions and firm performance. His articles have appeared in Industrial Relations (Berkeley), European Journal of Industrial Relations, Journal of Labor Research, Advances in Industrial and Labor Relations, Relations Industrielles/Industrial Relations, among others. Patrice earned a PhD in Human Resource Management from Université Nancy 2 (France) in 2002 and an “accreditation to supervise research” (HDR) from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2006. He is visiting Monash until April 15th. His academic hosts are Greg Bamber and Sandra Cockfield.
