This Monash Sustainability Institute (MSI) seminar will be presented by Professor Geoff Rose – Professor of Education for Sustainability, Monash Sustainability Institute.
Education for Sustainability (EfS) is essential for building the capacity of the community to make decisions based not just on economic, but also on social and environmental outcomes. Within the higher education sector, progress on EfS is mixed, with universities lagging the vocational education and training sector. This seminar examines the strategic context for EfS and draws insight from a project designed to develop and test an approach for integrating sustainability in higher education using the first year curriculum of the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University as a case study.
The project was guided by a collaborative model of curriculum reform which involved a sequence of facilitated workshops and meetings involving key internal and external stakeholders. A focus on learning outcomes proved to be an effective way to engage both external stakeholders and academic staff and led to tangible actions to embed sustainability into the curriculum. The roll out of the initiative in Semester 1, 2012 makes use of the virtual learning environment to deliver key sustainability resources to complement the first year units in the program. This seminar will draw learnings from the project and consider the transferability of the approach to other disciplines.
