Brief history of Monash
Monash University was established through an Act of the Victorian Parliament in 1958, named in honour of distinguished Australian soldier, scholar and engineer Sir John Monash.
From its first intake of 363 students at the University's first campus, in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton, the University grew rapidly and by 1967 there were more than 21,700 Monash students.
The 1990s was a decade of expansion for the University, with the addition of campuses in Caulfield, inner-city Parkville, Gippsland, Berwick and on the Mornington Peninsula.
Monash was the first international university to be invited to establish a campus in Malaysia, commencing courses in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, and moving to a new A$54 million purpose-built campus in 2007.
Monash South Africa was established in 2001 on an expanse of more than 100 hectares 25 kilometres north-west of the Johannesburg city centre. The South African campus already attracts elite students from more than 20 nations, educating a new generation of leaders for Africa.
In addition to a centre in Prato, Italy, which serves as a valuable gateway to universities in Europe, Monash has developed strategic partnerships with leading universities around the world.
