MUSO Open Access for Teaching Staff

Introduction

MUSO Open access replaces and improves upon the functionality previously provided by the WebCT Course list, and allows a section to be nominated as available for self registration.

This feature can be accessed via MUSO Manager and can be enabled by those users who's access level is Section Instructor or higher. Before taking advantage of this feature, we request that you familiarise yourself with the following points.

What MUSO Open Access is used for

MUSO Open Access has been designed to allow those people who are responsible for the administration of a MUSO Section to allow other members of the Monash Community to add and remove themselves from the Section.

It is designed to devolve the control of adding and removing users to the individual. If users want to be enrolled in a given Section, on a per user basis, Open Access is the easiest way to facilitate this.

Example

Individual Faculties wish to offer a MUSO Section which offers course overviews, and examples of how MUSO works specifically related to their units. By enabling Open Access on these Sections, users can enroll and un-enroll themselves as students at will.

What MUSO Open Access is not for

MUSO Open Access has not been designed as a replacement for MUSO Manager. It is not intended to replace the facility offered by mapping cohorts of students to Sections. Nor is it designed to manage staff access to Sections.

Example

A Lecturer wishes to allow a specific person access to their Section. Rather than opening the Section via Open Access, they should use MUSO Manager to add the individual person in question.

What Open Access will not allow you to do

  • Student enrolment and unit enrolment.
  • Open Access will not allow you to enrol in a Section, if such an enrolment will cause a roll conflict. All self-enrolments via Open Access enrol the user as a Student in the Section.

Turning Open Access On

When you Enable Open Access on a Section, the Section will be available for all members of the Monash community to enrol in. As such, any material inside the Section will be potentially visible to anyone in the Monash community.

Turning Open Access Off

If you Turn Open Access off after it has been turned on, those users who have enrolled them selves in the interim, will not be able to remove them selves again.

They will not be unenrolled as a result of turning Open Access off.

When users remove themselves

When users remove themselves from a Section, all grades for assignments, quizes etc, will also be removed.
