How to use My Files in Blackboard

Quick guide for Students

My Files icon You can use My Files to add and manage your personal files in Blackboard such as HTML, Word and PDF documents, images and audio, which can be later attached to an assignment or discussion post.

Upload a file
Download a file
Delete a file
Zip file(s)/folder(s)
Unzip a file

Upload a file

  1. Click on My Files in the My Tools menu.
  2. Click on Get Files. This will open up a new window.
  3. Click on My Computer to access all files on your computer.
  4. Navigate to the file you wish to upload, select it and click Open.
  5. The file will automatically be uploaded into My Files.

Note: Try to limit the size of your uploaded files to 1 MB or less if possible. The allocated amount of space per student user is 20mg. You will not be able to upload files when submitting assignments unless there is enough space in My Files. To avoid any possible issues with uploading files to Blackboard please refrain from using any of the following characters (or spaces) in your file name:
~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) + /\ : ? < > | ; " = , - Æ

Download a file

  1. Click on My Files in the My Tools menu.
  2. Navigate to the file you wish to download and click on the Action Links icon  next to the file name.
  3. Select Download. The file will automatically download to your computer.

Delete a file

  1. Click on My Files in the My Tools menu.
  2. Navigate to the file(s) you wish to delete. Click the check box next to it.
  3. Click on the Delete button.
  4. A warning message will appear. Click OK.

Zip file(s)/folder(s)

  1. Click on My Files  in the My Tools menu.
  2. Click on the check box next to the file(s) or folder(s) you wish to zip.
  3. Click on the Zip  button.
  4. In the Browse for Location window, select where you wish to save the zip file and click OK.

Unzip a file

  1. Click on My Files in the My Tools menu.
  2. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the title of the .zip file you wish to unzip.
  3. Click on Extract  .
  4. The unzipped file or folder will appear in your My Files with the same name as the .zip file. To access My Files, click on My Files in the My Tools menu.
