Creating and managing folders in Blackboard

Quick guide for Designers

 The Create Folder tool allows you to organise section components into folders.

Create a folder
Add headers, footers and content to a folder
Show/hide folders
Move content to a folder
Delete a folder

Create a folder

  1. Click on the Build tab.
  2. Go to the Home Page or folder where you wish to create the new folder.
  3. Click on the Create Folder  button at the top left of the main window.
  4. Type a title in the Title field
  5. If required, type a description in the Description field.
  6. Click on Show Item or Hide Item, depending on whether or not you wish students to see the folder.
  7. To create additional folders, click on the Add Another Folder  button and repeat steps 4-7.
  8. Click Save.

Add headers, footers and content to a folder

  1. Click on the Build tab.
  2. Go to the folder to which you wish to add items.
  3. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the folder title.
  4. Click Go to Folder  .
  5. To add a header, click on the Page Options button at the top right of the main window.
  6. Click on Edit Header.
  7. Click on Enable HTML Creator if this is not already activated.
  8. Type or paste the header content.
  9. If required, click on the box next to Use this as the default header for the entire course.
  10. Click Save.
  11. To edit the footer repeat steps 3-7, clicking on Edit Footer instead of Edit Header.
  12. To add content to the folder, select from the Add File  , Create Folder  and Add Content Link  buttons. For further information on adding the various types of content, refer to the relevant guides (e.g. the Adding and editing files in Blackboard quick guide).

Show/hide folders

  1. Click on the Build tab.
  2. Go to the folder you wish to hide or show.
  3. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the folder title.
  4. Click on Show Item or Hide Item as required.

Note: With the Selective Release  tool you can selectively show a folder based on set date, student, group or grade book criteria. For example, you may wish to show the folder for only a two-week period, or you may wish only some students to see the folder. For further information, refer to the Selective Release guides.

Move content to a folder

  1. Click on the Build tab.
  2. Go to the item you wish to move.
  3. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the title of the item you wish to move to a folder.
  4. Click on Move to Folder  .
  5. In the new window that appears, click on the name of the folder to which you wish to move the item.
  6. The item will now appear in the selected folder.

Delete a folder

  1. Click on the Build tab.
  2. Go to the folder you wish to delete.
  3. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the folder title.
  4. Click on Delete  .
  5. Confirm that you wish to delete the folder by clicking OK.

Note: If you attempt to delete a folder that contains content, you will be warned that all links inside the folder will also be deleted.
