Enabling Open Access in a Blackboard Section
Introduction
Blackboard Open access replaces and improves upon the functionality previously provided by the WebCT Course list, and allows a section to be nominated as available for self registration.
This feature can be accessed via Blackboard Manager and can be enabled by those users who's access level is Lecturer or higher. Before taking advantage of this feature, we request that you familiarise yourself with the following points.
What Blackboard Open Access is used for
Blackboard Open Access has been designed to allow those people who are responsible for the administration of a Blackboard Section to allow other members of the Monash Community to add and remove themselves from the Section.
It is designed to devolve the control of adding and removing users to the individual. If users want to be enrolled in a given Section, on a per user basis, Open Access is the easiest way to facilitate this.
Example
Individual Faculties wish to offer a Blackboard Section which offers course overviews, and examples of how Blackboard works specifically related to their units. By enabling Open Access on these Sections, users can enroll and un-enroll themselves as students at will.
What MUSO Open Access is not for
Blackboard Open Access has not been designed as a replacement for Blackboard Manager. It is not intended to replace the facility offered by mapping cohorts of students to Sections. Nor is it designed to manage staff access to Sections.
Example
A Lecturer wishes to allow a specific person access to their Section. Rather than opening the Section via Open Access, they should use Blackboard Manager to add the individual person in question.
What Open Access will not allow you to do
- Student enrolment and unit enrolment.
- Open Access will not allow you to enrol in a Section, if such an enrolment will cause a roll conflict. All self-enrolments via Open Access enrol the user as a Student in the Section.
Turning Open Access On
When you Enable Open Access on a Section, the Section will be available for all members of the Monash community to enrol in. As such, any material inside the Section will be potentially visible to anyone in the Monash community.
The process is managed via Blackboard Manger, accesible via the link in your my.monash portal. To Access Blackboard Manager, log into your my.monash portal and select the Blackboard Manager link from the left hand menu and navigate to the section that you want to enable allocate plus.
Locate the unit you wish to enable open access for and click on the Enable open access link, located under "Section utilities".
You will receive a confirmation screen. If you wish to proceed, click Enable Open Access
You have now enabled open access for the section. Click the confirmation button to return to the section.
Turning Open Access Off
If you Turn Open Access off after it has been turned on, users who have enrolled themselves into the section will not be able to remove them selves again.
Users will not be unenrolled as a result of turning Open Access off.
To turn off Open Access, Locate the unit you wish to enable open access for and click on the Disable open access link, located under "Section utilities"
If you are certain that you want to disable open access, click Disable Open Access
You have now enabled open access for the section. Click the confirmation button to return to the section.
When users remove themselves
When users remove themselves from a Section, all grades for assignments, quizes etc, will also be removed.
