Managing Assessments in Blackboard

Role:Instructors

 The Assessments tool allows you to edit the properties of an assessment or to show a hidden assessment, whilst the  Assessment Manager tool allows you to view, manage and grade students' submissions and to run reports to compare students' performance.

Edit the properties of an assessment

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessments in the Course Tools menu.

3. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the relevant assessment title.

4. Click on Edit Properties  .

Re-set the properties for the assessment.

6. Reset the number of attempts a student can make

7. Reset when a student score is released

8. Reset the period in which the assessment will be open to students (under Dates Available).

9. Click Save when you have finished.

Show a hidden assessment

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessments in the Course Tools menu.

3. Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the relevant assessment title.

4. Click on Show Item  .

Note: The assessment must contain at least one question before it can be shown to students. With the Selective Release tool you can selectively show an assessment based on date, student, group or Grade Book criteria. For further information, refer to the Selective Release guides.

Manage student submissions

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessment Manager in the Instructor Tools menu.

3. From here you can:

  • Review submissions that have been fully marked under the Graded tab
  • Grade submitted assessments under the Not Graded tab
  • View a list of students who are still to submit an assessment under the Not Submitted tab
  • View overall details under the All tab.

4. Clicking on the Expand/Collapse  button next to the name of the assessment will give you access to all individual student attempts.

5. Clicking on the ActionLinks icon  next to the assessment will give you options to View Submissions  , Grade All Attempts of a Single Question  and View Reports  .

Grade submissions containing paragraph questions

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessment Manager in the Instructor Tools menu.

  1. Click on the Not Graded tab.
  2. Under Title, click on the submission you wish to grade..

Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the title of the question to be graded.

If required, click on Hide Names.

Click on any one Attempt to grade paragraph questions. A View Question Attempt window opens.

Type a result in the Score field.

Type any comments in the Comments for Student field.

Click Save and View Next Attempt.

Note: You will have to complete these steps for each individual attempt

When grading all the individual attempts have been completed click on Done.

Reset student submissions

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessment Manager in the Instructor Tools menu.

3.Click on the Graded tab.

4. Click on the Expand/Collapse  button next to the title of the assessment you wish to reset, to give you access to all individual student attempts.

5. From here, you can reset all submissions for all students, or reset an individual student attempt due to exceptional circumstances or technical difficulties:

6. Click on the Reset Entire Submission button to allow all students to re-sit the assessment.

7. Alternatively, click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the relevant student name and select Reset Entire Submission  to allow that individual student to re-sit the assessment.

Modify or comment on student submissions

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessment Manager in the Instructor Tools menu.

3.Click on the Graded tab.

4. Click on the Expand/Collapse  button next to the title of the assessment you wish to modify or on which you wish to comment.

5. Click on the Attempt you wish to modify or comment on. A View Attempt window opens.

6. Here you can:

  • Override scores to individual questions
  • Adjust the overall score
  • Add comments to individual questions
  • Provide overall comments to students
  • Add a comment to the audit log explaining why the change was made.

7. When you have finished, click on Update Grade.

View reports on assessments

1. Click on the Teach tab.

2. Click on Assessment Manager in the Instructor Tools menu.

3.Click on the ActionLinks icon  next to the title of the assessment for which you wish to run a report.

4. Click on View Reports

5.Select the relevant assessment by clicking on its title in the Assessment Title Select drop-down list.

6. Select a report type by clicking on the circle next to the desired report options - Performance, Item Statistics, Summary Statistics or Class Statistics.

7. Click on the Run Report button.

8.Various options are then available to you, such as Manage Columns, Download Records and Query.

9. Click on the Back button to return to the Assessment Reports window to run another report.
