Grade Statistics in Blackboard

Role: Lecturer or Tutor

You can view Statistics (average, median, maximum, minimum, standard deviation) for student assessment items (e.g. Assignments or Quizzes) that are recorded in Numeric or Calculated Grade Book columns. You can release Numeric or Calculated Grade Book column Statistics (average only or all) for students to view via the My Grades tool.

Viewing Column Statistics

In the Teach tab, click on Grade Book under Instructor Tool

Locate the Numeric or Calculated column and click on the action links icon image actions icon to View Options for This Column. Click on the Column Statistics option.

Releasing Column Statistics to Students

In the Teach tab, click on Grade Book under Instructor Tools.

Click on the Grade Book Options actions, and click on the Column Settings action.

Locate the column, and click on the Edit Column Value setting (e.g. None) for the Release Statistics setting.

Click on the New Value: selection list, and select the desired Value to release to students (Average Only or All). Click on the Save button.

In order for students to see the statistics, the column needs to be Released to Students, and the My Grades tool needs to be available.

In the Grade Book->Column Settings, check that the Released to Student setting is Yes (or click on No to change to Yes).

Check that students will be able to view the Item and Statistics in the My Grades tool by clicking on the Student View tab, and clicking on the My Grades under the My Tools (in the left-hand navigation bar).

If My Grades is not available for students, you will need to enable it as follows:

Click on the Build tab, and click on Manage Course under Designer Tools (in the left-hand navigation). Click on Tools
(You also need to check the settings in Course Menu which we will look at after we have checked the Tools settings).

Scroll down to Student Tools, and click on the Checkbox for My Grades, Click on the Save button.

Still in the Manage Course view, click on Course Menu. Scroll down and locate the My Tools -> My Grades Student Visibility setting. Click on the Show Link button. (If it says Hide Link, it is visible for students).
