Copy section fails because of shared files

Symptoms

Copying a section into a new section may fail if the copied section contains links to material in another section or contains files to which another section has links.

Severity

Medium

A copy failure means you can't create a new section using content from another section.

User Roles Affected

  • Unit Leader
  • School/Department administrator
  • Faculty Administrator

Resolution

The vendor is aware of the issue.

Workaround

  1. Backup the section you wish to copy.
  2. Restore the backup:
    • go to the Blackboard Administration tab and navigate to the restore location
    • click the toolbox tab and then choose 'Backups'
    • click 'Restore from file' and then browse to and upload the file (usually on your local machine)
    • select the target course (eg Content copy problem group > Basil's test area)
    • select 'Use custom settings'
    • select the following restore options
      • 'Do not restore shared file structure. Restore files in archive'
      • 'Restore settings as is'
      • 'Deny access to all users in backup
      • 'Do not overwrite existing section. Restore backup as a new section'.
  3. Wait ...
  4. When finished, unenrol all the users from the section.
  5. Create the new section with content copied from restored section.
  6. Delete the restored section.
