Without Borders considers the place of 'outsider art' and situates the work of Australian and New Zealand artists in an international, trans-historical context. The exhibition focuses on the artists' ability to create rich idiosyncratic visual worlds based on popular culture, mythology and lived experience; a primacy and urgent vitality in the construction and rendering of their work; an emphasis on materiality and process; and the ability to transform humble materials and objects through artistic insight and creativity. The exhibition will include works in a diversity of media from painting, sculpture, photography, books, film and animation.

Film, Video and Animation Program

Runs concurrently with exhibition, featuring work by Norman Ballou, Laron Bickerstaff, Sue Chan, Thanh Diep, John Ellenden and Matthew Hopkins, Carol Hiltunen, John Hiltunen, Warren Jee, Jonathan Lunt, Cameron Noble, Jodie Noble, Alex Schwitalia, Gordon Shepard, William Tyler, Miles Howard Wilks.

Without Borders has been produced in partnership with Campbelltown Arts Centre

BEYOND THE MARGINS: CONTEXTS AND COMPLEXITIES AROUND THE COLLECTION AND DISPLAY OF OUTSIDER ART

    Thursday 22 May 2008, 4:30- 6pm
    Monash University Museum of Art

Outsider art is a broad and contested term, originally coined in 1972 by Roger Cardinal as the English equivalent of Jean Dubuffet’s term l'Art Brut. The terms art brut or outsider art are commonly used to refer to creative works, objects and/or environments made by people with no formal art training or experience, who are inspired by their inner experience and make their work without reference to mainstream art practice. The term 'outsider' is based on the assumption of a defined, although ambiguous border between the mainstream art world and the margins. So what happens when the work of outsiders is placed in the context of the contemporary art museum? Beyond the Margins will explore the origins and definitions of outsider art; the relationship of the outsider to the institution; and the contexts, complexities and challenges of collecting and exhibiting the work of outsider artists.
