Tom Roberts |
An overview of four decades of collecting focuses on three strong threads within the Monash University Collection. Portraits are the subject of the first grouping, which includes significant paintings by Tom Roberts and Fred Williams and more recent portraits by Jenny Watson and Linda Marrinon.
A second grouping is based on conceptual and post-conceptual art, with early works by Ian Burn, Tim Johnson and Peter Tyndall, shown alongside works by younger artists who draw on the legacy of conceptual art.
Other works are inspired by the city and suburbs, from a Howard Arkley painting of a suburban home and a luminous kitchen interior by Anne Zahalka, to Tracey Moffatt's images of domestic cruelties and Callum Morton's generic urban sign-sculpture.
A major publication on the Monash University Collection, with essays by various writers, will be launched with this exhibition.
The publication on the Monash University Collection is supported by the Gordon Darling Foundation.
