WA OFFICE OF ROAD SAFETY

March 21, 2007

Monash University’s Accident Research Centre (MUARC) has been awarded the tender to develop the next Western Australian road safety strategy, on behalf of the Road Safety Council.

Office of Road Safety Executive Director Iain Cameron said today MUARC was a leading injury prevention research organisation, which would provide independent and expert advice.

He said the staff that will work on WA’s strategy have international and national experience in developing road safety strategies and monitoring their effectiveness.

“MUARC has an unparalleled reputation for the quality and independence of its work,” Mr Cameron said.

Mr Cameron said MUARC’s work will:

  • Examine the political, economic, social and technological environment in WA as it relates to road safety;
  • Identify ways that a systematic approach to road safety with safer roads, safer vehicles, safer behaviours and safer speeds can reduce death and serious injury on the roads;
  • Analyse the costs and benefits of the safer system approach;
  • Develop road safety options to be considered by the community in various forums being held around the State this year; and,
  • Identify ways to considerably reduce death and serious injury.

Mr Cameron said a local company, Estill and Associates, had been awarded the community consultation tender to ensure the concerns and needs of all West Australians were considered.

The community, through consultation forums being held throughout the State, would be presented with the MUARC options for the future directions of road safety, and will be asked to provide input and debate on the various options. The independence of this process, which will identify proven solutions, and the extensive community and stakeholder engagement process, will ensure that WA gets the best possible strategy.

The recommended strategy would then be given to the State Government for endorsement.
