Visual clutter in the road environment: effects on safe driving performance

Jessica Edquist submitted her PhD in April 2008. The topic was the sources and effects of visual clutter in the road environment. This includes signage and road markings intended to communicate with the driver, non-driving related roadside objects such as advertising billboards, and also other road users. Jessica is interested in visual perception, attention, cognitive workload, and how these issues interact when applied to a demanding task such as driving safely. She is also interested in groups for which these issues may be particularly problematic, such as inexperienced drivers and older drivers.
