INTERCULTURAL BUSINESS COMMUNICATION (MCD1540)

Purpose

The aim of this unit is to provide a basic knowledge of the cultural and organisational frameworks within which international business is conducted. Topics include socio-cultural forces, cultural analysis, communication strategies and cross cultural management.

Prerequisites

Nil.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the general concepts of culture – its elements and those that can be applied to any cross-cultural situation
  2. Analyse and explain the nature of cross cultural communication
  3. Understand and compare contrasting value systems
  4. Evaluate different strategies to accommodate cultural diversity
  5. Understand the impact of culture on international business

Assessment

One 1500 word group assignment – 20%

One oral presentation (approx. 10 minutes in duration) – 20%

One e-portfolio (4 submissions) – 20%

Final examination (closed book) – two hours plus 10 minutes reading time consisting of short answer questions and an essay – 40%
