CONTEXTS FOR ART & DESIGN (MCD1480)
Purpose
This unit is designed to equip students with a theoretical knowledge base of the contexts that inform Art & Design practice. Students will trace a linear time-line and the socio-geographic expansion of the modern subject and consider how contemporary cultural issues relate to historical platforms.

Nil.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit, learners will be able to:
- Employ a basic understanding of semiotics to describe works of art & design.
- Interpret how the politics of identity and difference determine the history of art & design practice.
- Identify how the history of philosophy and science is interrelated with the history of art & design practice.
- Relate how different forms of patronage have shaped the history of art & design practice.
- Distinguish between forms of patronage, modes of production and the methods of consumption.
- Discuss who the client is and what factors are making the client change.
- Specify contemporary art & design issues and be able to launch an opinion as to how they could be addressed.
