CONTEXTS FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (MCD1450)

Purpose

This unit is designed to provide learners with an introduction to the effective organisational use of modern information systems. It is intended to provide a sound context for the study of I.T. and a framework for understanding and applying the concepts, principles and practices of Information Technology.

Prerequisites

Nil.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this unit students will:

  1. Understand the basic components of a modern information technology system.
  2. Understand appropriate business uses of the internet and the World Wide Web.
  3. Be sensitive to privacy and security issues in computing systems
  4. Be able to propose and apply organisational and processing strategies to produce an ongoing solution that meets the decision-making needs of an organisation.
  5. Be able to formulate and justify strategies for developing, implementing and evaluating a networked information system in response to a social, economic or technological impetus for change.

Assessment

Assignment 1: 20% - 1500 to 2000 word assignment/report

Assignment 2: 20% - 1500 to 2000 word assignment/report

Examination: 60% - 2 hour closed-book exam with 10 minutes reading time
