NETWORK COMMUNICATION (MCD1400)

Purpose

This unit is designed to introduce learners to the introductory theory, technical operation, and uses of computer networks and their associated hardware/software.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Outline the operation of a LAN, and describe its relationship to Internet communication (WAN)
  2. Describe some of the security risks associated with network communication
  3. Describe some of the hardware and software requirements needed to enable communication across small and large networks
  4. Describe the various types of media used for network communication
  5. Describe intranet operation, and the benefits to educational and business environments
  6. Describe the main features of various forms of network addressing
  7. Describe some of the features and technical requirements of B2B, B2C, and C2C e-commerce
  8. Describe the structure and basic elements of the OSI and TCP/IP network communication models
