MATHEMATICS FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (MCD1390)

Purpose

Mathematics for Information Technology introduces learners to the mathematical concepts of discreet mathematics and computational skills needed for a variety of IT applications and decisions. It intends to introduce logical thinking necessary for Mathematics and IT.

This unit is designed for learners undertaking information technology, computer science, and software or hardware engineering courses at tertiary level.

Prerequisites

MCD1150 Mathematics for Business or MCD1050 Introductory Mathematics or equivalent standard.

Learners are also expected to competently use a scientific, or graphics, calculator to carry out basic arithmetic operations

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

Convert one number system to another number system and perform simple mathematical opera tions in any number system
Describe and apply basic concepts and formulae in set theory.
Define, identify and apply basic terms and symbols in Propositions and Truth tables
Express simple logical statements using a verity of representational tools in Boolean Algebra
Use Combinations and permutations to produce results and carry out analysis in situations requir ing problem solving or modelling.
Apply sequences and series to solving problems

Test 1: 20%

Test 2: 20%

Examination : 60%
