Monash University Academy of Performing Arts presents
|
![]() |
This edited version of Hamlet faithfully follows the organic narrative, using Shakespeare's language. It is designed to provoke awareness and enjoyment of what is often considered to be the greatest play in English literature.
Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov (VCE English List)
![]() |
This play has deliberately been edited to give students an insight into Chekhov's writing, and Stanislavski's rehearsal processes -- loosely called 'The Method'. Chekhov wrote his plays about the middle class in Russia before the revolution and although the characters in Chekov's plays seem unaware of the great changes happening in the country all around them, they do have a sense of foreboding and melancholy which reveals the essence of a society at a point of change.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller

This production has been devised to provoke awareness and discussion in the classroom. The play is a metaphor for the political events which led to the accusations made by Senator Joe McCarthy in the USA against artists, writers and film makers who were accused of being communists or fellow travellers during the period of the cold war. Arthur Miller himself was accused and pressured to betray his fellow American artists. The play is emotional, moral and dynamic.

The Director -- Peter Oyston has directed plays in London, Paris, Tokyo, Yale University, USA and here in Melbourne when he was director at Playbox. He has designed the presentation of these plays to develop awareness of the basics of theatre for young audiences.
The Cast -- are specialist Honour students of the Centre for Drama and Theatre Studies of Monash University.
After each performance the cast and producer will discuss the play with the audience in order to provoke further discussion.
