Savoy Opera presents Gilbert and Sullivan's

![]() |
After the sailors sing of their happiness at being members of the crew of their "saucy ship," the HMS Pinafore, Little Buttercup is welcomed on board, carrying tobacco, scissors and other provisions necessary for sailors. The sailor Ralph Rackstraw, smitten with the captain's daughter Josephine, knows that he loves above his station and bemoans the social barriers that separate him from his beloved.
Jurors and reporters gather in a court of justice in preparation for a much-publicised case involving the Plaintiff (Angelina) suing the Defendant (Edwin) for breach of promise of marriage. The Court Usher instructs the jury to remain impartial while colluding with them to ignore Edwin's evidence. The Defendant enters and, taunted by the jury, attempts to justify his actions. The Judge takes his seat and describes how, through sycophancy, connections and corruption, he attained his elevated position.
