Monash University Opera Ensemble presents an abridged version of
Mozart's The Magic Flute

Director: Linda Thompson
Conductor: Lucas de Jong
Designer: Jeffrey Paul

Monash University Opera Ensemble presents an abridged version of Mozart's The Magic Flute on 17 and 18 August, sung in English by students of the School of Music-Conservatorium, and accompanied by a 29 piece orchestra conducted by Lucas de Jong.

Directed by Linda Thompson, Coordinator of Voice at Monash, the production allows students to explore their potential through the complex medium of opera, and provides audiences with an opportunity to be at the forefront of a journey in the development of young singing artists engaged in the pursuit of excellence.  For the majority of the students, The Magic Flute is their first experience of singing in an opera.

Being a small ensemble of around 20 students, Monash University Opera Ensemble productions are dictated by the resources at hand.  As an abridged, chamber version, with a stunning minimal set designed by Jeffrey Paul, this production premise is influenced by a scarcity of male singing students at Monash this year!

Centred around Tamino's experience, immersed in the value of relationships rather than the quest for enlightenment, Tamino is placed in a dream/nightmare in which his friends and acquaintances come and go in a restless evening of traumatic, romantic and incongruous situations.  The performance lasts for approximately 80 minutes, and is fully costumed. Performing Mozart's glorious music, delving into these extraordinary characters, combining movement and orchestral awareness, this production is a rare experience for an undergraduate student and a unique opportunity for an audience to observe dedication, potential and enthusiasm in young singers practising and learning their craft.
