IntroductionThe Robert Blackwood Concert Hall is available for hire by the University, commercial producers, performing arts groups, corporate bodies, educational institutions and multi-cultural groups.
The Robert Blackwood Concert Hall is the most prestigious venue of its size outside the CBD. Acoustically it ranks with the best available in Australia. As such, the venue has accommodated and supported commercial recordings for the ABC and Melbourne Symphony and for numerous film music scores. Being a concert hall it has no stage curtains or fly tower. However, the huge stage accommodates a full symphony orchestra. The stepped stage makes it ideal for choral works, which can be accompanied by the Sir Louis Matheson pipe organ, built by Jürgen Ahrend and acclaimed as one of the finest instruments of its kind. Alternatively, there are two full concert grand pianos including one Steinway. The state of the art audio and lighting systems can satisfy the most demanding requirements. There is comfortable fixed seating for 1,598: 1,254 in the auditorium and 342 in the balcony. A licensed bar services the foyers, which are enhanced by the larger than life paintings by distinguished Australian artists such as Arthur Boyd and the Lindesay Clarke stained glass window designed by Leonard French. |
