Bring your friends and enjoy a relaxed afternoon, sample from orchestra, jazz, chamber music and new music. Music in the Round at Monash presents an outstanding line-up in a range of genres with dynamic and eclectic performers.

 

Joining the 2009 bill is ARIA award winner Katie Noonan, critically and internationally acclaimed guitarists Slava & Leonard Grigoryan and one of Australia’s best known opera singers, David Hobson and a host of artists from throughout the country.

 

The festival will also feature a special family/ children’s series, to be enjoyed by all.

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto joins Music in the Round program!

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Orchestral Concert
The Winner of the Monash Concerto Competition in 2009 was announced on Friday July 31. It was pianist Jin Shi Tang.

She will perform the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2

Jin Shi Tang is currently completing her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education at Monash University, where she is a student of Tamara Smolyar. She holds a Licentiate and Diploma from the Royal Schools of Music.
Ms. Tang has received many awards during her studies, including the Allans Music, Bernies Ensemble, Joan Earl and Chamber Music prizes, and is the winner of the Monash Concerto Competition in 2009. She has worked as an
accompanist for the opera ensemble at Monash University, for student recitals at Monash and Melbourne Universities, and accompanies singers and musicians from various high schools and at the Margaret Dalglish School of Singing.
She won the Margaret Schofield Award for the most promising young accompanist at the National Liederfest competition in both 2008 and 2009. Ms. Tang has performed with a group of National Youth Orchestra tutors to premiere
chamber works, and has also performed the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto no.2 with the Maroondah Symphony. She had also recently performed at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with research fellow - Catherine Branch from the
U.S on a Disability Art Project.

 

Also featured on this program will be a performance of Ian Munro’s Childrens Concerto featuring a very youthful Tian Tian Lan who is all of 9 years old!  Tian Tian is already a prodigy of the piano performing in many public concerts to considerable acclaim.

> Multiple ARIA award winning guitarist Slava Grigoryan performs the Rodrigo Concierto d’ Aranjuez with the Monash Academy Orchestra conducted by Mark Shiell

 

> University ensembles including the Monash Wind Symphony, Monash World Music Orchestra, Monash

Academy Orchestra and Monash String Sinfonia perform popular programs throughout the day

Chamber

> Acclaimed Australian string quartet Tinalley Quartet perform Schubert and Beethoven

 

> One of Australia’s most popular lyric tenors, David Hobson performs Britten’s Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra principal horn Andrew Bain and the Monash String Sinfonia conducted by Jeffrey Crellin. David will also perform a recital with associate artist Caroline Almonte

 

> Acclaimed chamber groups Duo Solo, Ensemble Liaison and Trio Anima Mundi perform works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Frank Bridge and Tony Gould

 

> Philip Gould narrates The Cocktail Suite for two pianos by Michael Easton with an original script by Kate Lawson Gould

 

> Slava Grigoryan and Leonard Grigoryan perform a guitar recital featuring music by Debussy, Leonard Grigoryan and Ralph Towner.

 

> Emerging Monash composers premier their works with Jeffrey Crellin oboe, Matthew Wilkie bassoon and Ian Munro piano

 

Jazz

> Multi award winning and multi platinum selling Australian songstress Katie Noonan performing with Monash artists

 

> Renowned Italian jazz saxophonist Mirko Guerinni performs with Monash Artists

 

> Monash Stage Band

 

Family Trail

> A series of special children’s programs including Paul Williams’ fun filled Elastic Band, and George Dreyfus’ live music accompanying the 1974 documentary A Steam Train Passes.
