Careers in injury prevention

The field of injury prevention attracts experts from a broad range of interests and academic backgrounds.

The United Nations has recently highlighted the crucial role senior leadership has to play in reducing road trauma and death in its landmark document Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.

However, road safety executives face enormous pressures in achieving national road fatality and serious injury reductions within a climate of considerable financial constraint.

In response to these challenges we have developed an intensive road safety management and leadership course. This course is the first of its kind to offer executives from a range of road/transport, police, local government and health agencies the knowledge necessary to effectively deliver road safety strategies.

The Road Safety Management and Leadership course is designed to meet the high-level training needs of executives from Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region.

The intensive one-week course is offered in partnership with the Centre for Automobile Safety at the University of Adelaide and is supported by the National Road Safety Council.

The course will cover:

  • evolution and key elements of the Safe System approach to road safety management
  • institutional management
  • performance management
  • funding and resource allocation
  • planning, design, operation and use of road networks
  • entry and exit of drivers, vehicles and commercial operators
  • recovery and rehabilitation of crash victims
  • leadership in the effective delivery of Safe System road safety management.

The course will be at Monash University's Clayton campus, and the first intake is expected in November 2012.
