MIRI established a presence in South Africa in mid-2008 and are committed to enhancing road safety and injury prevention by directly engaging key stakeholders and communities throughout the continent.
Known as the Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (IPSP) Research Node, our staff sit within the Office of the Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University's Johannesburg campus.
The focus to date has been on undertaking research projects focused on road safety in South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia. Our staff have also been actively engaged in the delivery of road safety short course programs in partnership with the University of South Africa.
We are dedicated to building on established relationships with government bodies such as the South African Medical Research Council, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (of South Africa), the Ministry of Home Affairs (in Tanzania), the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund of Namibia, as well as with academics from the University of South Africa and the University of Botswana Trauma Working Group. The IPSP is an active member of the Global Road Safety Partnership (South Africa).
Our academics at the Johannesburg campus can also supervise PhD research in partnership with academics within MIRI.
