Quality supervision will always be at the heart of research degrees at Monash.

All of our main supervisors are active researchers in their fields, and members of the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research.

We insist on this because we feel research is a partnership. And we know that you can only achieve your highest goals when working alongside a strong partner.

Active researchers

Only active researchers can give you insights into today’s research environment.

That’s why we make sure all of our supervisors are still directly involved in the latest ideas, innovations and investigations in their field.

And they are able to guide you through the realities of promoting and funding your work, finding the right collaborators, and getting connected with industry and the community.

More than one supervisor

We are focused on helping you pursue research that is relevant to the world beyond the university.

And we know that world is not neatly organised into faculties or disciplines. Your research could cross many academic lines and could take you on to a variety of careers.

That’s why we insist you work with more than one supervisor.

We let you benefit from the advice and guidance of multiple experts. We let you work alongside unique researchers who each have unique talents.

It’s another way of giving you more opportunities, and more options.

Trained supervisors

As accredited members of the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research, our supervisors are given extra support in how best to support you.

This accreditation shows your supervisor has experience in guiding a PhD candidate from commencement to successful completion. And it means they have met the high standards of our supervisor training program.

The right guidelines

All our supervisors work to a strict code of practice. This is based on the Australian Code for the Responsible Practice of Research. This code makes clear the responsibilities Monash, your supervisor and you must uphold to continue the high quality research and research training of a world class university.
